Search practitioners involved in metabolic health care across Australia, including GPs, endocrinologists, hepatologists, gastroenterologists and bariatric surgeons.
Which type of doctor do you need?
Your GP manages most metabolic health, and is the right first appointment for nearly everything on this site. They can order the blood tests and imaging that guide everything else, initiate treatment, and coordinate referrals. Continuity matters here — a GP who knows your history is better placed to interpret a changing pattern than a one-off consultation.
An endocrinologist specialises in hormonal and metabolic disorders, including complex diabetes, thyroid disease, PCOS and obesity medicine. Referral is typically for complex or difficult-to-control cases.
A hepatologist or gastroenterologist specialises in liver disease. Referral is generally for advanced fibrosis, unclear diagnoses, abnormal results that don't fit the picture, or when specialist monitoring is needed.
A bariatric surgeon assesses and performs metabolic surgery, always as part of a multidisciplinary team including dietetics and psychology.
Referrals and rebates, briefly
Specialist appointments generally require a GP referral, and that referral is what makes a Medicare rebate available. Standard referrals last twelve months; indefinite referrals are possible for ongoing conditions. If your referral lapses you may pay the full fee, so it's worth checking before an appointment.
Checking a practitioner's registration
Every registered health practitioner in Australia is listed on the AHPRA public register, which shows registration status, qualifications and any conditions on practice. It's free, public, and worth a minute of your time — particularly for services you're paying for privately.

We list practitioners for information. We don't publish ratings or reviews, and inclusion is not an endorsement. Verify registration via AHPRA and confirm details with the practice.
