Access isn't the same everywhere

Where you live meaningfully affects what care you can get and what it costs — worth knowing before you assume a service isn't available to you.

Metropolitan areas have the widest choice, including private services that don't exist elsewhere, and generally the shortest waits for specialist appointments.

Regional centres typically have good general practice and some specialist services, often through visiting clinics that run on a schedule rather than continuously. Diagnostic services including elastography are increasingly available regionally, though not universally.

Rural and remote areas face genuine access constraints. Telehealth has changed this substantially for consultations — many specialist appointments no longer require travel, and Medicare rebates apply to eligible telehealth consultations. Physical tests still require a visit, but that may be a single trip rather than repeated ones. If travel is required for specialist care, patient travel assistance schemes exist in every state and territory, and are widely underclaimed.

A practical note: if the nearest listed service looks far away, ask your GP whether the assessment can be done locally and the interpretation done remotely. For much metabolic care, it can.
