Allied health is more accessible than people assume
You don't need a referral to see a dietitian, exercise physiologist or psychologist privately. What a referral changes is the cost: through a GP-initiated care plan, Medicare rebates are available for a limited number of allied health visits per year for eligible chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes.
Private health insurance extras cover may also apply, and the two can't be claimed for the same visit. If cost is a barrier, this is worth a conversation with your GP — the pathway exists and is routinely underused.
