What to look for

Do you need a referral? For a GP, no. For most specialists — endocrinologists, hepatologists, gastroenterologists — yes, and a valid referral is also what makes you eligible for a Medicare rebate on the consultation. Allied health such as dietetics can be accessed directly, though a GP care plan may give you rebates for a limited number of visits.

What will it cost? This varies more than most people expect. Some practices bulk-bill, meaning no out-of-pocket cost. Others charge a fee and you claim a rebate back, leaving a gap. Ask what the total fee and the expected gap are when you book — you're entitled to know before the appointment, not after.

Does the clinic offer what you actually need? Metabolic care spans several disciplines. A practice offering weight management may not offer liver scanning; a radiology provider may do the scan but not interpret it in the context of your broader health. Is it the right level of care? Most metabolic health is well managed in general practice. Specialist referral is usually reserved for advanced findings, unclear diagnoses, or where treatment isn't working as expected. Starting with your GP is both the standard pathway and the cheaper one.
